The best free public-data sources for market research
Published 2026-06-10
A practical list of lawful, free public data sources for competitive and market research — and what each one is actually good for.
Most of what you need for competitive and market research is publicly available and free — if you know where to look and what each source is good for. Here's the working list, all lawful and public.
Company-published sources
- Pricing pages — current list pricing and packaging, straight from the source.
- Press releases and newsrooms — launches, partnerships, funding, leadership changes.
- Careers pages and job postings — the most underrated signal. A surge of sales hires, a new role for an unannounced product, or a location expansion all show up in postings before press. (Worked example.)
Official records and filings
- Public company filings — for public companies, annual and registration filings disclose competition, risk factors, and financials. The risk-factors section is especially candid.
- Business registries — entity registration, status, and officers at the state or national level.
- Permits and licensing records — particularly useful for local-market work.
Web archives
- Public web archives — archived versions of competitors' own pages let you reconstruct how pricing and positioning changed over time, with a capture date you can cite.
Public sentiment and demand
- Public reviews — recurring complaints map directly to market gaps and unmet needs.
- News aggregators and RSS — a per-competitor news feed keeps you current with near-zero ongoing effort.
The rule that makes free sources safe to use
Public and free is not the same as "anything goes." The line we hold, and recommend: use only lawful public sources, never bypass paywalls, terms of service, or rate limits, and never touch private, restricted, or leaked data. Then cite every claim to its source with a capture date. That keeps the research both defensible and lawful.
